Music & Art

At Calvary we believe that the fostering of the arts is central to the mission of the church. Throughout history, one of the most positive roles the wider church has played in society has been as a safe haven for art and music and for artists of all kinds.

In a neighborhood with few public spaces, Calvary is honored to serve as a gallery and performance venue for our community. From the beautiful artwork created in and for our space, to the wide number of musical offerings at Calvary, we hope you are able to make meaningful connections here.

Our choirs and soloists, guest musicians, established ensembles who make use of our facilities, our landmark instruments, and the visual and acoustic beauty of our spaces, all combine to make Calvary an important nexus for the arts and spirituality in San Francisco.

Upcoming Music & Art Events

Music in Worship

Calvary has a long and rich history of beautiful liturgical music, and that tradition is vibrantly alive today in our weekly worship services which feature our 50-voice Chancel Choir, our 6,200 pipe organ and other beautiful instruments, professional soloists and other fine guest musicians, children and youth choirs, and a range of exceptional music you likely won’t encounter in many other churches. This includes everything from Gregorian chant to Bach to gospel and jazz to brand new arrangements of cherished hymns. We believe that a meaningful, powerful church music ministry is one that respectfully encompasses the great diversity of our people and our time and place.

Choirs

Choral music and congregational singing are at the heart of Calvary’s worship culture. For over a century Calvary has been known in San Francisco and beyond for having choral music of the finest quality and that tradition continues today.

Concerts

In addition to weekly services Calvary’s Music Ministry also presents many concerts in our visually and acoustically marvelous sanctuary and chapel. These include masterworks for choir and orchestra, concerts of chamber music or a cappella repertoire, solo vocal recitals, organ recitals, and more. Many highly respected ensembles also choose Calvary for their concerts including the SF Bach Choir, the SF Choral Society, the SF Boy’s Choir, the Young Women’s Choral Projects, the SF Academy Orchestra, and others.

Organs & Pianos

Calvary is home to a number of beautiful, historical musical instruments.

Art

From stained glass windows to peaceful oil paintings and marble sculpture — the many pieces of art at Calvary are a feast for the senses and for the soul.

We have certainly been through a dark time in our world, our country, and in our city. And it’s not over, by any means.
