Welcoming Certain Refugees: A look at the numbers
According to the UN Refugee Agency, 82.4 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced at the end of 2020 as a result of persecution, conflict, violence, human rights violations or events seriously disturbing public order. Unfortunately, certain communities are given more attention than others with regards to resources, media attention, and admission to countries.
For example, many of us have seen and supported Ukrainian refugees dealing with life threatening circumstances, but refugees in countries such as Syria, South Sudan, and Myanmar also face dire situations yet have not received a fraction of attention, openness to resettling, or financial support.
Join us as we take a closer look at the numbers and hear from Elgiva Wood, Community Sponsorship Manager, at the International Rescue Committee. She’ll share an overview of the refugee situation globally, we’ll discuss how the media can influence who countries allow in, and learn about ways we can support those resettling in the US who might be overlooked.
