The Interfaith Food Pantry provides an accessible neighborhood outlet close to public transportation for SF Food Bank resources. Each Saturday, one of five host churches uses the well-located Old First Presbyterian Church’s meeting hall to provide a week’s worth of groceries to around 300 of the city’s families. The churches use funds they raise to buy protein and rice or pasta from the Food Bank’s resources, to add to the abundant variety of donated produce.
The Food Pantry needs 18 volunteers on each Saturday morning, beginning at 7:30 am to unload the Food Bank truck, and set up the distribution room and the reception area for the 300 guests. No training or clearances are needed, and each volunteer is rewarded with face-to-face exchanges with the population we serve. Any one of any ability can help.
Distribution starts at 9 am, and finishes not later than 10:30 am. We clean up the rooms for the church’s Sunday activities, wrapping up not later than 11:30 am. As a bonus, we have free parking validation stickers to give volunteers who park at the Old First Garage on Sacramento.
